Best time to visit the Sahara Desert
Spring and autumn give the most comfortable temperatures for the drive to Merzouga and a night in the desert camp. Here's what to expect in every season.
Season by season
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best windows: warm days, mild nights, and clear skies for the sunset camel trek and the drive over the High Atlas. These months are also peak season, so desert camps and hotels along the route book up further in advance.
Summer (June–August) is very hot in the dunes, often above 40°C (104°F) by midday. It's still a good time to go if you plan around the heat — the camel trek and dune activities happen at sunrise or sunset rather than midday, and the desert camp is at its liveliest.
Winter (December–February) brings mild, sunny days but genuinely cold desert camp nights, sometimes close to freezing. Pack warm layers for the evening around the campfire and for sleeping, even though the daytime drive is comfortable.
