What is the best 7-day itinerary in Morocco?
For a first visit, a route that starts in Marrakech, crosses the Sahara at Merzouga, and ends in Fes covers the most distinct ground without wasting days on the road.
Why this order works
Morocco's best-known sights sit far apart — Marrakech, the Sahara, and Fes are each a full day's drive from the next. A 7-day trip only has room for one direction of travel, so the route matters more than any single stop. Starting in Marrakech (the easiest international arrival point), crossing the High Atlas to the desert, and finishing in Fes means every driving day also passes through new scenery — the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Valley — instead of backtracking over ground you've already covered.
The alternative — looping back to Marrakech instead of ending in Fes — adds a full extra driving day for no new scenery. Ending in Fes instead lets you fly out from a different city, which is usually the same cost or cheaper on a one-way domestic flight or train back.
The route, day by day
07 daysDays 1–2: Marrakech
Arrive and settle in. Two nights is enough time for the medina, the souks, and one activity such as a hot air balloon flight at sunrise or an Agafay desert excursion, without rushing straight into a long drive.
Days 3–4: Marrakech → Merzouga via Ait Benhaddou
Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, and continue through the Dades Valley to the Erg Chebbi dunes. A sunset camel trek and a night in a Berber desert camp follow.
Days 5–6: Merzouga → Fes via the Middle Atlas
Sunrise over the dunes, then a drive north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas (often with a stop in Ifrane or near Azrou) to Fes, the best-preserved of Morocco's imperial cities.
Day 7: Fes
A full day in the Fes medina — the tanneries, the Al-Qarawiyyin area, and the old Fassi quarters — before departure.
